go. love. serve. was born on the rooftop of an abandoned building in Leogane, Haiti 7 months after the catastrophic earthquake in 2010. As I peered out of my tent to examine the rubble and chaos that still remained, it was extremely difficult to comprehend the devastating destruction yet see so much hope and joy from the Haitians. People from all around the world had come to help: Christians, Jews, Muslims, Atheists, you name it. They didn’t come with any agenda or an imaginary cape on their back trying to be a hero. Actually, quite the opposite. They listened to local leaders and did whatever needed to be done, doing the less glamorous work so the Haitians could feel empowered to rebuild their lives with dignity. For whatever reason, all of these volunteers had been inspired to interrupt their own lives to go. love. serve.
Since that experience, go. love. serve. has become a life motto that I try (yet sometimes fail miserably) to live out daily. However, I think it can be more than a motto.
I believe it can be a movement.
Let’s face it, we live in a pretty messed up world. For the most part, as a human race we are selfish, ego-centric, and broken. But imagine a world where we put others first. A world where we love others not for a hidden agenda or for something in return, but just because. A place where people of different races and religions intentionally care for one another. A life-changing environment for everyone to go. love. serve.
go outside of your house, outside of the walls of your church, outside of your daily routines and normal circles, and go outside of your comfort zone. To move forward in life, you have to go.
love others like you mean it, like the way you want to be loved. Love them just because. Love others when they deserve it and especially when they don’t. Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Atheists and even the Beatles can all agree on love.
serve the people you care for, and serve the people who aren’t cared for. Serve the wealthy and serve the poor. Serve your enemies. Put your love into action and make the most powerful statement of all, serve.
What exactly does it look like to go. love. serve? That’s where YOU come in!
To start this movement, we have set up a facebook page for you to share inspirational stories and gather additional ideas for ways we can go. love. serve. locally, nationally, and globally. This could be something that you’ve done, a friend has done, or even something that was done for you! The beauty of this movement is that you don’t necessarily have to travel the world or plan some big event. The truth is that there are tons of opportunities for us to go. love. serve. each and every day!
We are also encouraging everyone to take a picture with their go. love. serve. bracelet (wherever you are going, loving & serving locally, nationally or globally) and share on our facebook page and other social media outlets using the hashtag #GoLoveServe. Of course, these pictures are not designed to “pat ourselves on the back,” but to keep momentum for the movement and celebrate these life-changing moments!
